Futsal: Goalkeepers reign supreme as League Cup kicks-off

Dundee University 1sts' Nuno Borges tries to get the better of AGB Dundee West keeper Rob Black.

Goalkeepers were on top and kept goals at a premium as cup futsal in SFL-Dundee kicked off at the DISC.

The first round of the SFL-Dundee League Cup opened with Dundee Stars taking on and beating St Andrews University 3-0 as Louie Anderson scored a brace with Jamie Campbell’s goal sandwiched between in a fiercely fought match.

Stars keeper Michael Smith earned himself a clean sheet to set up a second-round clash with Dundee City.

Dundee Stars (red) beat St Andrews 3-0.

Awaiting the winner of that match in the semi-final is AGB Dundee West after they got the better of Dundee University 1sts in a close match.

The deadlock was finally broken five minutes into the second half by a howitzer from Darryl Gowans. George Cran doubled their advantage by finding the net from a tight angle, making it 2-0 with four minutes remaining.

Goalie Rob Black also managed to keep the Uni players at bay as he kept a clean sheet.

Darryl Gowans (No 2) broke the deadlock with a fine long-range strike.

League leaders Dundee Celtic got back to winning ways after falling 4-3 to Dundee West Colts last week.

The Celts faced FC33 with Dominic Duffy firing in the first for Celtic. Adam Fairweather levelled, though the scoreline didn’t stay equal for long, as Celtic quickly replied with a strike from Alex Gibb to win his side the match 2-1 and a place in the semi-finals.

The game didn’t go without drama as FC33 keeper John Russell was shown red after taking Ryan Sivewright out of the game with just seconds on the clock.
