Scotland’s IFA World Cup hopes hang in the balance after Australia rout

Scotland warm up before their clash with Australia in Jiangmen.

Scotland’s IFA team were on the end of a humbling 8-0 scoreline against a rampant Australia side to leave their World Cup hopes in the balance.

After a good start to the International Futsal Alliance competition by beating India 6-3, the Scots find themselves with the tough task of seeing off Mexico on Friday for a place in the semi-finals.

The Mexicans themselves leapfrogged Scotland with a 15-0 thumping of the Indians.

Early mistakes from the Scottish backline gave the Aussies a 3-0 lead and they never looked back.

Scotland coach Eoin Boylan told Pivotal Sport: “It was a disappointing result but it was much closer than the score suggests.

“We were three goals down early on to individual errors and after that we kept it close for a while.

“They were clinical where we missed a few chances.”

He added: “The boys were a bit down after the game but we did a lot of things well in phases and need to keep the heads up for tomorrow against Mexico.”

Kick off on Friday against Mexico is 6.45am UK time. A live stream will be available on the IFA Facebook page.
